The shipyard was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Thuan Thanh Industrial Park in the northern province of Bac Ninh. It will be operated by Alumax Amsterdam, a joint venture comprising the company and local firms, conglomerate Son Ha Group and shipbuilder James Boat.
Representatives of the joint venture compared the production process to “playing with Lego,” as workers assemble pre-cut aluminum components into the final product.
Alumax Boats is a technology company specializing in building aluminum vessels. It first sold vessels in Vietnam in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic through a partnership with James Boat.

Now, under the joint venture, it provides the core high-performance aluminum shipbuilding technology, Son Ha contributes industrial manufacturing capacity, management expertise, and financial resources, and James Boat acts as the technology bridge between the partners.
Alumax Boats and James Boat together will take care of vessel design, with production designs transferred to Son Ha’s manufacturing facilities.
The JV’s leadership said it sees strong demand in Vietnam for catamaran party yachts, which are open-deck leisure vessels that can accommodate 30 to 50 passengers.
They are typically equipped with sound systems, dining areas, bars, bedrooms, and spacious decks for guests to enjoy ocean views.
“This has been identified as one of our strategic products to capitalize on the growth of marine tourism in Vietnam and across the region,” a JV spokesperson said.
This year, the JV plans to produce three yachts ranging from 6.5 to 16.5 meters in length. It has already secured orders for government service vessels and yachts worth US$20 million.
Son said manufacturing yachts in Vietnam would reduce prices by 40% compared to imports.
Aluminum’s lightweight properties improve fuel efficiency, and the vessels, after a service life of 40 to 50 years, can be recycled far more effectively than steel and composite boats, which are still commonly made in Vietnam.
